Fake Ledger Live apps circulate on third-party stores. They look identical but siphon your seed phrase the moment you enter it. Bookmark ledger.com, verify the SSL certificate, and download the desktop or mobile app directly. A single typo in the URL can cost your entire portfolio.
CREATE A DEDICATED EMAIL FOR LEDGER ACCOUNTS
Ledger Live sends critical alerts—firmware updates, security breaches, and transaction confirmations. If this email is compromised, attackers can reset your Ledger Live password and lock you out. Use a unique, complex password and enable two-factor authentication on the email itself.
PHASE 2: SETUP YOUR PORTFOLIO FOR MAXIMUM GAIN TRACKING
ADD EVERY EXCHANGE AND WALLET YOU OWN
Ledger Live’s portfolio view aggregates balances across exchanges, DeFi protocols, and self-custody wallets. Click “Add Account,” select the blockchain, and enter your public address or API key.
ENABLE REAL-TIME PRICE FEEDS FOR ALL ASSETS
Static price data is useless in crypto. Ledger Live pulls live prices from CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap. If you don’t enable this, you’ll make buy/sell decisions based on stale data, potentially buying high or selling low. Go to Settings > Countervalues and toggle “Live Prices” for every asset.
SET UP CUSTOM PORTFOLIO GROUPS
Grouping assets by strategy (e.g., “Staking,” “Long-Term HODL,” “Trading”) lets you track performance per goal. Without this, you’ll mix high-risk trades with conservative holdings, making it impossible to measure which strategy actually works. Right-click any account, select “Edit Group,” and create labels.
PHASE 3: OPTIMIZE FOR TAX EFFICIENCY AND GAIN CALCULATIONS
IMPORT FULL TRANSACTION HISTORY
Ledger Live calculates cost basis and capital gains only if it has every transaction. Missing even one trade skews your tax reports, leading to overpayment or audits. Click “Accounts,” select an asset, then “Operations” to sync the full history. For exchanges, use the API import tool.
SELECT THE CORRECT ACCOUNTING METHOD (FIFO, LIFO, HIFO)
Tax laws vary by country. FIFO (First-In-First-Out) is default, but HIFO (Highest-In-First-Out) can minimize gains in bull markets. Picking the wrong method inflates your tax bill by thousands. Go to Settings > Accounts > Accounting Method and consult a crypto tax professional before finalizing.
GENERATE TAX REPORTS BEFORE YEAR-END
Waiting until April to run reports means missing last-minute loss harvesting opportunities. Ledger Live exports CSV files compatible with Koinly, CoinTracker, and TurboTax. Run a draft report in December, sell losing positions to offset gains, and save 20-30% on taxes.
PHASE 4: AUTOMATE GAIN TRACKING AND ALERTS

ENABLE PASSPHRASE PROTECTION
A 24-word seed phrase is your last line of defense. Adding a 25th passphrase creates a hidden wallet. If someone steals your seed, they can’t access the passphrase-protected funds. Without this, a single physical theft or phishing attack wipes out your entire portfolio. Go to Settings > Security > Passphrase and set a strong, unique phrase.
BACK UP YOUR LEDGER LIVE DATA TO ENCRYPTED CLOUD STORAGE
Local backups fail when your computer crashes. Ledger Live can encrypt and upload your transaction history to iCloud or Google Drive.
